Adapted Physical Education

Adapted Physical Education (APE) is specially designed physical education for those students whose significant deficits in the psychomotor domain have been identified and who, if school aged, are unable to participate in regular education programs on a full-time basis.  The APE teacher is an integral member of the multidisciplinary team trained to address the needs of the "Whole Student".  The APE teacher brings to the team expertise in motor, fitness, recreation, leisure and socialization; and, with the team, effectively integrates these concerns into the student's educational program.

Specific responsibilities of the APE teacher include:

  • screening for motor deficits

  • administration of diagnostic tests in fine and gross motor

  • refer children needing additional services to SBLC

  • schedule students on caseload

  • attend all IEP's involving students on caseload

  • plan and implement APE programs for students on caseload

  • report student progress to parents

  • update IEP annually

  • dismiss students from caseload, when appropriate

  • enforce disciplinary policy in APE classes

  • develop lesson plans in accordance with school procedure and practices

  • maintain appropriate records for school use
